Free phone consultation · (910) 622-7987What is dog behavior modification?
Dog behavior modification is training aimed at a specific problem behavior, such as reactivity, aggression, fear, leash pulling, jumping, nipping or resource guarding, instead of at commands alone. At Off Leash K9 Training of Jacksonville, NC, it starts with a free phone consultation and is delivered through one of our published programs: Aggressive Dog Training (8 private lessons, $1,000), Board & Train (one week $1,600 or two weeks $2,800) or Basic Obedience (4 private lessons, $650).
Which Program Fits Which Behavior
| Behavior | What we train | Usual program |
|---|---|---|
| Lunging or barking at other dogs | An obedience foundation first, then structured work around other dogs to build desensitization | Aggressive Dog Training |
| Aggression toward dogs or people | The same foundation-then-trigger order, planned around your dog's history | Aggressive Dog Training |
| Guarding food, toys or space | Interrupt-and-redirect control through obedience, then the specific trigger scenarios | Aggressive Dog Training |
| Pulling on the leash | Loose-leash walking, or off-leash heeling in the 2-week program | Obedience Lessons or Board & Train |
| Jumping on guests, rushing the door | Off, extended Place and Sit, greeting and door manners | Board & Train or Obedience Lessons |
| Puppy nipping and biting | Routine, crate and potty structure, and how to stop nipping | Puppy Consultation |
What a Behavior Modification Plan Looks Like
- Free phone consultation. Tell us what the behavior is, when it happens and what you have already tried. We tell you which program fits and what it costs.
- Rule out a medical cause. If the behavior started suddenly, or your dog has become aggressive without an obvious reason, have your veterinarian check your dog first. Pain and illness can change behavior.
- Build the foundation. Commands like Off, Place, Sit and Down with duration, and Recall become the tools you use to interrupt the problem and redirect your dog.
- Work the trigger. Your dog practices around the thing that sets them off, in structured and controlled setups first, then in real life.
- Hand it to you. Lessons are one-on-one with you and your dog; a board and train ends with a 2-hour turnover session where we teach you everything your dog learned.
- Keep it going. Results depend on practice at home. The 2-week board and train includes a free refresher for life.*
*Refresher and results terms are on our guarantees page. Results vary by dog and by how consistently the family keeps up the training.
Dog Trainer or Veterinary Behaviorist?
A veterinary behaviorist is a veterinarian with specialist training in behavior (board certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists). They can diagnose medical and psychological causes and prescribe medication. A dog trainer teaches your dog, and you, new behaviors. Many behavior problems are training problems; some are not. If your dog's behavior changed suddenly or the aggression is severe, start with your veterinarian. We are glad to work alongside them.

Behavior Modification Questions
How is behavior modification different from obedience training?
Obedience teaches commands. Behavior modification uses those commands to change a specific problem, like reactivity or guarding, and then practices around the trigger until your dog responds differently.
How much does dog behavior modification cost in Jacksonville, NC?
It depends on the program that fits the behavior: Aggressive Dog Training is $1,000 for 8 private lessons, Basic Obedience is $650 for 4 private lessons, and Board & Train is $1,600 for one week or $2,800 for two. Every price is on our pricing page.
Can an aggressive dog really change?
Often, yes. Aggression usually traces to missing obedience and uncontrolled exposure, and our program addresses both in that order. Every dog is different, so we talk through your dog's history before recommending anything.
Do you use an e-collar in behavior modification?
We use the tools appropriate to each dog, introduced properly, and we teach you to use them correctly. Read how and why on our e-collar training page.
